Using Pinterest to Promote and Keep Track of Reading

Well, Pinterest is the new craze! I’ve had an account for a while, but haven’t really done anything with it – UNTIL NOW.  My problem originally was I was overwhelmed! There was so much to look at when I logged on that I just shut it off because I couldn’t decide where to focus. I don’t really surf the web that often.  When I’m online I have a reason. I’m either blogging my book reviews, reading other reviews, or researching. I don’t do a lot of shopping. I don’t dream of how I can decorate my future house. I’m not a foo-foo person so I don’t like sparkly, shiny things. What I do like are books! So, now I’ve decided to combine Pinterest and my love of reading and see how that works out.

I’m not the first person to do this.  I’ve seen a couple of posts about this topic that I’ll link below. What I’m doing today is letting you guys know how I plan to use Pinterest.

  1. I’m going to have genre boards.  I’ve already started my Science Fiction board since I have been reading a lot of that lately. I’ll be adding other genres soon. These books will be linked from Goodreads.
  2. I’m going to have a board with all of my Stay Awake Award reviews pinned to it. These books will link back to the review posts on my blog.
  3. I’m going to attempt to create a board for a book club that I do in the future.  I might collaborate with my Library Science students or some Middle School students I hope to have a virtual book club with soon. I haven’t decided yet.

Are any of you doing things with Pinterest? If so, share in the comments below.

Seven Cool Ways to Use Pinterest
This one lists only one book-related suggestion, but I LOVE IT!

  • Start a Pinterest book club.

This is one board I’m hoping to start in the coming months – a little book club for me and others interested in reading the same books as me. Lots of people use Pinterest to share their favorite books, but what about creating a group board (where anyone can pin things) and every month reading a book together, using the board to share links to reviews and analysis, products inspired by the book, interviews with the author you’ve found, etc. When I read a book I like, I love to read as much about it as possible, and share with others who are reading the same things, so Pinterest could give us a fun place to collaborate.

Here is a board kind of using that idea. Valley of the Dolls Book Club Party Board.
